WOLF MATTERS PETITION
ABOUT OUR PETITION The petition that Wolf Matters has created is a hard copy paper petition that needs to be downloaded, printed, and sent in to Wolf Matters head quarters for future presentation. This petition was approved by the legal department of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in August, 2013. The benefit of having been approved is that it will be presented to the Sitting Assembly in the Legislature when we feel we have enough signatures. Because this petition is addressed specifically to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, the petition should contain signatures of residents of Alberta only. Persons not resident in Alberta cannot petition the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Each petitioner must sign, not print, his or her own name directly on the petition and must not sign for anyone else. If a petitioner cannot sign because of illness or a disability, this must be noted on the petition and the note signed by a witness. A petition must contain original signatures written directly on the document and not pasted, taped, photocopied or otherwise transferred to it and signatures must be in ink. Signatures and addresses must appear on the first sheet with the text of the petition. The address may either be the petitioner's full home address, or the city and province, or the province and postal code. As with the signature, the address must be written directly on the document and not pasted, taped, photocopied or otherwise transferred to it. The inclusion of other contact information (such are telephone numbers or email addresses) is permitted but not required. Our wolves need a show of support if there is to be any change in their treatment, and we are grateful to anyone who wishes to print the petition sheet from this website and collect signatures. For more information about our petition and petitions in general, please see our FAQ section below. Please mail signed petition sheets here: Wolf Petition P.O. Box 27081 Red Deer, AB T4N 6X8 |
Help us reach our signature goal! Please check back periodically to check the progress of our signature count tracker! And please, keep gathering those signatures!

WHY DON'T WE HAVE AN ONLINE PETITION?
It is true. Wolf Matters does not have an online petition. The only petition that we have is a paper petition that must be downloaded and printed for real pen to paper signatures. We are often asked the question: Why don't you have a online petition? They are so much easier to sign and share then a paper petition.
Here is our answer:
Signatures collected online are not permissible to the Legislature; only original handwritten names, addresses and signatures of Alberta residents are accepted. Names and addresses on a petition are verified by the government. Online petitions make it easier for individuals/groups to manipulate those signatures (for example by adding fake names, duplicating names, etc) and thus they lack credibility.
Online petitions can be a great method to bring awareness to an issue, so if you want to sign one, by all means do it, but please don't stop there. Write a letter or an email to your representative, give them a phone call, or sign a legal paper petitions in support of your cause.
Well crafted petitions are a great way to attract political attention and initiate change. We have asked you to download and print hard copies, collect individual signatures with mailing addresses and then use the postal system to send them to our office. Many people feel that this is cumbersome, time consuming and inefficient in this day and age. But this is the only way that we can initiate change. We think that wolves are worth this extra effort. Don't you?
Petitions submitted to Canadian legislatures have to follow strict guidelines. For more information about these specifics and the rules and regulations in regards to submitting petitions, see the following:

FAQ's ABOUT THE PETITION
Q - Why can't you also have an online petition to complement the paper petition?
A - We have chosen not to create or share an online petition for our cause because we have found that many people sign the online petition and simply stop there, believing that they have done their part. We have found that most people will sign an online petition before they sign a paper petition and that, while the online petition is gathering many signatures, the paper petition that really counts is neglected.
Q - Can anyone sign the petition?
A - Anyone residing in Alberta can sign the petition. As long as you have an Alberta address, you can sign the petition. People that live in the same household can all sign the petition.
Q - Why isn't the caribou related wolf cull included on your petition?
A - At the time WM formed as a group, the aim was to tackle issues effecting central Alberta only & not specific "wolf programs". Since our group has expanded and we have gained more support, we now hope to tackle all issues facing wolves in all of Alberta. Sadly, though, the petition cannot be changed or re-done without losing all of our current signatures. We are advocating for change in regards to the wolf cull/caribou conservation issues in various other ways and ask that you do as well.
Q - Can you change the petition contents?
A - No. Once a petition has been approved by the petitioner of Canada, it cannot be changed. The petition would have to be discarded and started over again, meaning that we would lose all of our current signatures and all of that time spent gathering them, will have been wasted. Additionally, it would take months to get a new petition approved and legalized again.
Q - Is there an age limit? Can children sign?
A - There is no age restriction on who can sign the petition as long as the person knows what they are signing for. This is a good thing, as it gives people a chance to educate young people on very important issues. It is interesting to note that the USA has an effective 12 year old girl wolf advocate.
Q - Must I include my entire address?
A - According to the petition guidelines of Canada, the address may either be the petitioner's full home address, or the city and province, or the province and postal code. As with the signature, the address must be written directly on the document and not pasted, taped, photocopied or otherwise transferred to it. The inclusion of other contact information (such are telephone numbers or email addresses) is permitted but not required. Is there a time limit on the petition?
Q - I think I signed your online petition, does that count?
A - No, Wolf Matters does not have an online petition. There are online petitions out there that are advocating for change with regards to some of the same issues that WM is promoting, but those petitions were not formed by our organization. If you have signed them, please also download our petition and sign it as well.
Q - How many signatures are needed before the petition can be presented in the legislature?
A - There is no minimum number of signatures needed - though of course we aim for high numbers. (It is inspiring to think on the efforts of Jill Fritz and her volunteers who collected 253,000 signatures for a petition on the behalf of wolves in Michigan. Since time was short, many volunteers gathered signatures by going door-to-door).
Q - Is there a time limit in which the petition must be submitted?
A - No, there is no time limit however the sooner the better if we want to help the wolves.
Q - Where do I send my filled petition sheets to?
A - Petition sheets can be sent to:
Wolf Petition
P.O. Box 27081
Red Deer, AB
T4N 6X8
Q - Does a sheet need to be entirely filled to be sent back to you?
A - It doesn't have to be completely full but it would be nice if it was!
Q - I don't have a printer, can I find your petition somewhere else?

Q - Why do online petitions exist if they are not valid ?
A - Online petitions are a great way to bring awareness to an issue or a cause very fast and very easily. What most people don't understand though is that, often times, online petitions are not valid from a government point of view and are often viewed as lacking in credibility.
