We have had many people write to tell us that they are not getting responses from the Alberta government to the emails and letters that they have written. One of our advisors has told us that the key to letter writing is to be SPECIFIC with your questions. Write short and sweet, yet direct specific questions that you want answered. If you don't receive answers back to your direct questions, then you can request answers via FOIA (Freedom of Information Act). There is a cost of $25 to do this but it can have a real impact, especially if the Commissioner gets several FOIP requests on the same questions. We have provided the link below so that if you have a direct question that is not being answered, you can go this route as we have. Thank you!
FOIP in ALBERTA LINK Myrna Pearman, one of WM volunteers, receive the Popular Book Award from the Alberta Chapter of The Wildlife Society for her book Backyard Bird Feeding: An Alberta Guide. We are very proud! And during her acceptance speech she mentioned the cruelty of snaring! Here is what she said:
Recent news that a pair of Golden Eagles were caught in a wolf snare near Sundre – the female died the day before yesterday and prospects look grim for her mate - has tempered the gratification I feel about yet more neighhourbood chickadees and woodpeckers benefiting from the offerings of human kindness. How is it that we can celebrate and adore our backyard birds yet at the same time allow the barbaric practice of snaring to continue? How many more golden eagles? How many more pets, deer, bears, wild horses, cougars and countless other wild animals will be needlessly squandered because of snares? How many more animals will be allowed to suffer pointless, slow and agonizing deaths before we are sufficiently shamed by this great hypocrisy? We can do better. In the spirit of this award, may we raise our collective voice for what is right. Thank you Myrna for being an advocate for wildlife! Members of the Red Deer River Naturalists were advised at their meeting last week that two golden eagles had been caught in wolf snares near Sundre. Carol Kelley of the Medicine River Wildlife Society, where the injured eagles were brought, explained that the injuries were severe but that the birds will likely recover.
This is tragic and another valuable lesson in why snares should be banned immediately in this province. Read the full story HERE People can donate to the Medicine River Wildlife Society HERE |
